Final Evaluation

Music Magazine Evaluation
The brief for this assignment was to create a front cove and double page spread for a magazine type of our own choice. I chose to do a magazine which would appeal to young adults of the ages 14-18 who liked the popular genre, but with a slightly edgier vibe to it (almost rock).
Firstly, I started work creating my front cover using Adobe Photoshop to create a layout plan to give myself a starting basis of something I wanted my magazine to look like. I made space for all the things a magazine must have… Mastheads, Pull Quotes, headlines, banners, main headlines, barcode, date & price, central image and more. I then decided on a colour scheme, looking closely at other magazines for inspiration, I chose Red as the main dominant colour, with black and white making up the rest of the text as these worked well with the red I had chosen. I chose clear fonts to display my text in, and also for the masthead I chose something which would be memorable for anybody wishing to buy this magazine again.
This brings me onto coming up with a suitable name. I had a lot of possible name choices which was very confusing and they were all hard to remember so I used the site Tagxedo to create a word cloud with them, and then the one that stuck out the most to me as a good name to choose was Feature, so I chose this and played around with it until I got it exactly the way I wanted. The font I chose for my front cover is called Broadway and because of its style it matched the name of the magazine.
I placed the masthead so it ran along the top of the page and everything else below it, the central image of my model overlapped it ever so slightly which was fine as the examples I chose to look at also did this.
Taking the images of my model was fairly easy as we had the photography studio all to ourselves and could choose the correct lighting that would work for the shoot. She came into college ready for the images to be taken which took time off what I originally had planned. Once I had gained enough images that I felt were suitable, it was time to start editing them, again, using Photoshop.

Final Outcomes for Front Cover and Double Page Spread

Tagxedo Image (word cloud)

I made this image of a music note on Tagxedo which lets you experiment with different words relating to the image in a creative way. I used different names which I considered calling my music magazine. In the end I ended up using the name Feature which I think is relevant to the style.

Mast Head Design

I decided to choose the last "Feature" as I felt that it would match the style and theme of my magazine best. It was a simple font which is easy to read and recognize which is important with a Masthead. I made it large on the page so it stood out. I also changed it into a bright red colour which is eye catching.
